Oliver is a British writer and director known for his evocative storytelling and connection to cultural history. He began his career directing music videos for artists such as The Horrors, The Vaccines, and Noel Gallagher, while his early short films received widespread recognition, earning Vimeo Staff Picks, TV Broadcasts on the BBC and Channel 4 as well as numerous international festival awards.
His ability to craft cinematic, real-world narratives led to collaborations with leading advertising agencies, including BBH, AMV BBDO, M&C Saatchi, VCCP, and JWT. He has directed campaigns for brands including Microsoft, Natwest, O2, Linkedin, Nestle, Visa Card, Fred Perry, Tescos, Vice, Vodafone and Red Bull, winning Creative Circle, AICP, Shots and 1.4 awards.
Oliver’s passion for music and documentary shaped his feature-length debut. The Quiet One (2019), exploring Rolling Stone Bill Wyman’s archives premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was acquired by IFC Sundance Selects. His next film Ronnie’s (2020), chronicling Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, earned international critical acclaim and award nominations including a BIFA.
In recent years Oliver has worked prolifically in television. He wrote and directed They All Came Out to Montreux (2021), executive produced by Quincy Jones, he directed a second collaboration with The Rolling Stones, My Life as a Rolling Stone (2022), which won BANFF and Rose d’Or Awards, and directed Chinese pianist Lang Lang performing at the Royal Albert Hall in Lang Lang Plays Disney (2022) for Disney+.
In 2023 Oliver directed Now & Then, The Last Beatles Song (2023), marking the historic release of The Beatles' final track. The film became a global phenomenon, marking the historic release of the band's last song with a simultaneous live broadcast of the documentary in over 20 countries. His relationship with The Beatles and Disney continues through 2024/25 as he completes a landmark television series on the band set for an Autumn 2025 release.
Beyond filmmaking Oliver has appeared on the BBC and Sky News, and has been profiled by The New York Times, Shots, Directors Notes, The Treatment Podcast with Elvis Mitchell and Q Magazine. In 2025 Oliver is developing documentaries on photographer Terry O’Neill and the legacy of the Southbank Centre. He is also returning to scripted storytelling alongside his documentary work with Echoes In Amber, his first narrative project since the Covid pandemic.
